Jennie Lee (Janet Lee), Baroness Lee of Asheridge, was a prominent Scottish Labour politician, teacher and author whose parliamentary career spanned the 1920s to the 1970s. First elected in 1929, she became known as a left‑wing representative associated with the Independent Labour Party and figures such as James Maxton, and she retained political influence even during periods outside the House of Commons. She married Aneurin Bevan in 1934; the marriage did not end her public work, although biographers note that her private career underwent adjustments after the union. As the first Minister for the Arts in Harold Wilson’s government (1964–1970), she played a central role in creating the Open University, advocating open access to higher education and the use of radio and television as teaching tools. Her 1966 white paper and the political persistence she showed were decisive in establishing the university, which received its royal charter in 1969 and admitted students in 1970. Throughout her life, Lee was known for her commitment to equal opportunity, her activism on international causes such as support for the Spanish Republic during the Civil War, and for maintaining a practical feminist stance in public life. Her most enduring legacy is the democratization of higher education in the United Kingdom through the Open University.
