Jimmy Knepper was an American jazz trombonist whose work spanned big bands, studio sessions, and musical theatre. He led his own recordings and became known for collaborations with figures such as Woody Herman, Stan Kenton, Benny Goodman, Gil Evans, Thad Jones & Mel Lewis and, most notably and contentiously, the composer and bassist Charles Mingus. His career included international tours — among them trips to Africa and the Soviet Union — and appearances at major festivals such as Montreux.

Beyond his work in big bands and small groups, Knepper worked extensively in musical theatre: he was part of the pit orchestra for Broadway productions, most notably Funny Girl, and performed in shows with Marlene Dietrich. In the late 1970s and through the 1980s he received critical and public recognition, earning Grammy nominations and repeated first-place votes in DownBeat magazine as best trombonist.

His legacy combines technical virtuosity and stylistic versatility, alongside a personal history marked by controversial episodes with Mingus that affected his performing career. Later he led the Mingus Dynasty, keeping the composer’s music alive and influencing generations of brass players.
