John Alexander Simpson was an American experimental physicist and science communicator, noted for his work as a professor‑researcher at the University of Chicago and for his public engagement on the implications of nuclear energy. A key figure in the founding of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists and an influential member of its governing bodies, Simpson argued for scientists’ social responsibility after World War II. As an inventor, he designed pioneering detectors — among them a gas-flow proportional counter for α‑particles, a multiwire proportional counter and a neutron monitor — instruments that improved precision in radiometric measurements, many of which were flown into space, including detectors carried on missions such as Pioneer and Stardust. He held multiple patents and contributed directly to the development of radiation detectors. A leading researcher in cosmic rays, he organized networks of neutron monitors at various sites and took part in coordinating the International Geophysical Year (1957–58). With Peter Meyer he founded the Laboratory for Astrophysics and Space Research at the Enrico Fermi Institute, bringing together instrumentation and space science efforts. His legacy blends instrumental innovation, academic leadership and public commitment to the responsible use of science, influencing research in particle and space physics as well as policy and debate on nuclear technology.
