John Altoon was an American visual artist of Armenian descent and a prominent figure in the Los Angeles art scene of the 1950s and 1960s. Trained at local art institutions, he developed a body of work influenced by Abstract Expressionism, although he is best remembered for his figurative drawings and a biomorphic iconography that transformed landscapes and natural elements into free, spontaneous forms. He was associated with the circle around the Ferus Gallery, a milieu that brought together avant-garde artists and increased his visibility through important museum exhibitions across the United States. In the Ocean Park series, Altoon translated the California coast into direct, gestural compositions that sought an immediate connection between creative impulse and execution. His personal life included periods of mental illness that affected both his life and the critical reception of his work; later treatments led to years of intense productivity. His legacy endures in the meeting of figurative and abstract modes and in the memory of the role he played in establishing Los Angeles’s art scene during the mid‑20th century.
