John Evelyn was an English writer, diarist, gardener and civil servant whose wide-ranging intellectual output made him a central figure in seventeenth-century England. A founding member of the Royal Society, Evelyn kept diaries that, with varying levels of detail, cover the period from 1640 to 1706 and provide direct testimony on events such as the execution of Charles I, the Cromwellian regime, the Great Plague and the Great Fire of London. These memoirs are a valuable source for historians, recording customs and political and cultural events from before the modern periodical press. Alongside his diary, Evelyn published treatises and translations across diverse fields: forestry and horticulture (Sylva, 1664; Terra/Philosophical Discourse of Earth), practical gardening (The French Gardener; The Compleat Gardener), environmental urbanism (Fumifugium) and studies on art, numismatics and architecture. His work Sylva was particularly influential for advocating reforestation and the management of the nation’s timber resources. Although many of his other writings have been overshadowed by the diaries, they reveal a restless, polymathic mind concerned with cultural, scientific and practical reform of the English environment. Evelyn’s legacy lies both in the historical accounts preserved in his journals and in his promotion of gardening and conservation practices that influenced later landowners, architects and naturalists.
