John Howard Griffin was an American journalist and writer from Texas, best known for the book Black Like Me, the result of a journalistic experiment carried out in the late 1950s. To investigate racial segregation in the U.S. South, Griffin temporarily altered the appearance of his skin and traveled through towns and highways of the Deep South, reporting in detail on the everyday restrictions and hostility faced by African Americans; the initial articles appeared in a magazine and the expanded book became a bestseller in 1961, later adapted for film in 1964. His work also includes fiction and essays on blindness, sight, and ethnography, such as the semi‑autobiographical novel Nuni and accounts of his experience of losing and regaining his vision. He also worked as a photographer and lectured on civil rights, receiving recognition for his contribution to understanding racial issues. The notoriety of Black Like Me brought him both prestige and persecution: Griffin and his family endured threats and assaults, including attacks by the Ku Klux Klan. In the final phase of his career he focused on research into the writer and monk Thomas Merton, leaving posthumous works and influencing debates on racial justice and journalistic ethics.
