An English poet of the second generation of Romanticism, John Keats is known for a brief but intensely powerful body of work. Originally trained in pharmacology and with experience in surgical practice, he left medicine to devote himself to literature, shaped by his classical education and an interest in mythology and languages.
His poetic output—characterized by sensory imagery and a refined lyrical language—includes poems and odes that are now landmarks of English poetry, such as La Belle Dame sans Merci, Endymion and the fragments of Hyperion. Publications between 1817 and 1820 established his voice despite contemporary criticism, which received works like Endymion poorly.
A short life and early death did not prevent Keats from exerting a strong posthumous influence on poets such as Tennyson, the Pre‑Raphaelites and later generations. His letters and poems also reveal a critical and philosophical reflection that broadened his literary legacy, making him one of the central figures of English Romantic literature.
