John the Younger Herschel was a military engineer, surveyor and English astronomer, a member of a family of notable scientists — son of Sir John Herschel and grandson of William Herschel. Educated at the East India Company’s military seminary and commissioned into the Royal Engineers, he served mainly in India, where he took part in the Great Trigonometrical Survey between 1864 and 1872, carrying out geodetic and topographic surveys of the southern part of the country. Alongside his field work, he made independent astronomical observations of note: he observed the solar corona by spectroscopy during the total eclipse of 1868 and studied the Carina Nebula, being among the first to record the intense brightness of Eta Carinae. He also conducted experiments with the Cavendish pendulum to estimate the density of the Earth, combining geodetic and gravimetric interests. He collaborated internationally — including work with Charles Sanders Peirce in the United States on gravimetric surveys — and held leadership posts in arc-system trigonometry, reaching the honorary rank of colonel on retirement. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and of the Royal Astronomical Society, leaving a legacy in nineteenth-century geodetic surveying and astronomical observation.
