Johnny Richards, born Juan Manuel Cascales Valero, was a Mexican‑born jazz arranger and composer who worked prominently in the United States from the 1940s through the 1960s. Known for his bold orchestral writing, he arranged and composed for big bands as well as for film and television scores, contributing to several innovative projects of the era. His most notable work came in collaboration with Stan Kenton’s big band, participating in landmark recordings such as Cuban Fire!, Kenton’s West Side Story and Adventures in Time, helping drive the rhythmic and harmonic experimentation of symphonic jazz at the time. Richards also led his own bands and released records on major labels, showing versatility between popular and avant‑garde repertory. He wrote songs recorded by established artists—most famously Young at Heart—and, with influences traced to figures like Duke Ellington and Pete Rugolo, established a reputation as a creative and refined modern arranger. His legacy endures in the recordings and performances that helped expand the orchestral possibilities of modern jazz.
