Jorge Du Peixe, stage name of Jorge José Carneiro de Lira, is a singer, songwriter and a central figure in the manguebeat movement, born in Recife. A member of Nação Zumbi and, since 1997, the group's vocalist and sampler operator, Du Peixe helped preserve and expand the band's aesthetic after the death of Chico Science, blending northeastern Brazilian rhythms with rock, hip hop and dub.
Over the decades he has worked in side projects — such as Los Sebosos Postizos, Los Hooligans and Afrobombas — and taken part in collaborations that go beyond music, composing soundtracks for Brazilian films including Amarelo Manga and Febre do Rato. As a member of Nação Zumbi he contributed to the group’s discography on significant releases and international tours.
His artistic practice combines rhythmic research, visual identity and sound production, reaffirming the idea of the northeastern “matrix” (notably baião and maracatu) as a foundation for contemporary experimentation. In 2020 he published a young adult book, showing activity in the editorial and narrative fields as well.
