Karl Brandt was a surgical physician and a central figure in the Nazi regime’s public health administration. A member of the SS and part of Adolf Hitler’s inner circle at the Berghof, he held high-responsibility posts, including Commissioner for Health and Emergency Medical Services, with direct authority from the Führer. Trained as a surgeon with a specialization in cranial and spinal trauma, Brandt rose politically from 1932 and became one of Hitler’s trusted physicians from 1934.
During the Nazi era, Brandt played a prominent role in euthanasia and eugenic policies: he participated in implementing selective abortions and was co-responsible for the Aktion T4 program aimed at eliminating those deemed “lives unworthy of life.” His actions are also linked to coordinating and authorizing medical experiments on human subjects during the war.
After World War II, Brandt was tried in the so-called Doctors’ Trial by a U.S. military tribunal, convicted of war crimes and crimes against humanity, sentenced to death, and executed in 1948. His legacy is defined by the instrumentalization of medicine for state-led extermination policies and by systematic violations of medical ethics.
