Kate Perugini, born Catherine Dickens and also known as Katey, was an English painter of the Victorian era and a prominent figure in the artistic and social circles of her time. The daughter of the writer Charles Dickens, she became known both for her paintings and for her presence in influential cultural salons, maintaining friendships with figures such as J. M. Barrie and George Bernard Shaw. She first married the artist and writer Charles Allston Collins and, after his death, married the painter Charles Edward Perugini; with the latter she had a single child who died in childhood. She also took part in literary efforts and served as a direct source for biographers investigating aspects of Charles Dickens’s family life, contributing to accounts about intimate relationships and scandals of the period. As a professional artist she was part of the social and artistic networks of the Victorian era, exhibiting and taking part in London’s intellectual life. Her career combined artistic production, social engagement, and the status of a member of a highly notable literary family, leaving a legacy tied both to her painting and to the public memory of Charles Dickens and his circle.
