Katherine Paterson is an American writer best known for her children’s and young adult novels that address difficult subjects with sensitivity. Her most famous work, Bridge to Terabithia (1977), earned her the Newbery Medal in 1978 and became a landmark for its honest treatment of loss and grief for young readers. Between 1975 and 1980 she won two Newbery Medals and two National Book Awards for four different books.
Internationally recognized for her contribution to children’s literature, Paterson received the Hans Christian Andersen Award for Writing (1998) and the prestigious Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (2006), as well as the NSK Neustadt Prize for Children’s Literature (2007) and the Children’s Literature Legacy Award from the American Library Association (2013). She also served as the second National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature in the United States (2010–2011).
Born to missionary parents in China and trained in English, Paterson incorporated Far Eastern cultural influences into works such as The Sign of the Chrysanthemum (1973). Her writing centers on young protagonists who face crises and develop courage and empathy; her legacy endures in the renewal of realistic language for young readers and in advocating literature as an educational force.
