Kaye Ballard was an American actress, singer, and comedienne whose career spanned stage, television, and recordings. Born Gloria Katherine Balotta to Italian parents, she became known as a musical comedienne in the 1940s, joining Spike Jones’s troupe and building a repertoire that combined physical comedy with musical numbers. On stage she originated roles in Broadway and regional repertory musicals and plays, including Helen in The Golden Apple, and appeared notably in productions such as The Pirates of Penzance, Carnival!, and Follies. She also recorded themed works, and was the first person to record the song “Fly Me to the Moon” in 1954. On television she became a familiar presence on popular programs and series: she was one of the Kraft Music Hall Players on The Perry Como Show, co-starred in the sitcom The Mothers-in-Law (1967–1969), and was a regular cast member on The Doris Day Show. She also made memorable appearances in telecasts such as Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella and in series including The Muppet Show and Alice. Known for her versatility and comic timing, Ballard remained active for decades, receiving honors such as a Golden Palm Star in 1995; she announced her retirement in 2015 and left a legacy as a versatile performer in American entertainment.
