Lakshmi Shankar (Mahalakshmi Sastri) was an Indian singer prominent in the Hindustani classical tradition, associated with the Patiala Gharana. Trained initially in the performing arts as a member of Uday Shankar’s troupe, she turned her career toward vocal performance after health problems, deepening her repertoire in khyal, thumri and bhajan under the guidance of masters such as Ustad Abdul Rehman Khan and Ravi Shankar. Her career crossed genres and borders: she took part in the Music Festival from India and toured with Ravi Shankar in the 1970s, collaborating on recordings produced by George Harrison and leading the ensemble at key moments. She also composed music for bharatanatyam and worked with dance companies outside India, demonstrating versatility between classical tradition and contemporary projects. On record, she left important releases on Indian and international labels, with albums of classical and devotional music that helped spread Hindustani vocal music in the West. Her artistic legacy lies in the combination of classical rigor, intercultural collaboration and the global promotion of Indian music.
