Leo Hendrik Baekeland was a Belgian chemist who settled in the United States and is known for innovations that gave rise to the modern plastics industry. Graduating with honors from Ghent, he initially worked in photography, creating the Velox photographic paper (1893), which brought him commercial success and the funds to establish his own laboratory. After selling his stake in the Nepera Chemical Company, Baekeland turned to industrial chemistry and electrochemistry, contributing to electrolytic processes used in large chemical plants. His best-known work was the controlled synthesis of phenolic resins, culminating in 1907 with the invention of Bakelite, an inexpensive, nonflammable and versatile plastic that paved the way for large-scale industrial and consumer applications. Considered by many “the father of the plastics industry,” Baekeland combined systematic research with practical application, emphasizing control of temperature, pressure and reagent formulation. He received academic and institutional recognition during his career, including election to scientific societies, and left a lasting legacy in applied chemistry and the manufacture of synthetic materials.
