Leopold Mozart was a musician, composer, conductor and violin teacher active in the second half of the 18th century. Known for a substantial output — symphonies, serenades, concertos (notably for flute, oboe, bassoon and trumpet), sonatas and sacred music — his works were widely circulated in his day, although much has been lost or overshadowed by the fame of his son, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. As a pedagogue he published methods and guidance for instrumental practice and performance, and played a central role in the musical training of Wolfgang and his sister Maria Anna. He took the child prodigy on tours across Europe, presenting him at courts and to the aristocracy, and devoted a significant part of his career to publicly promoting his family's talent. Some pieces attributed to Leopold have been confused with works by Wolfgang, and vice versa; nonetheless among works ascribed to him are the well‑known “Toy Symphony” (Cassation in G) and a trumpet concerto, as well as programmatic pieces that explored sound effects and popular instruments. Modern assessment of his output has paid closer attention to the variety and orchestral color of certain symphonies, revealing a composer who, though overshadowed, made noteworthy contributions to the instrumental repertoire and to the pedagogical practice of his time.
