Les Clark (Leslie James Clark) was an American animator and film director, remembered as the first of Disney’s “Nine Old Men.” He joined the company in 1927, starting as a camera operator and paint artist, and quickly moved into animation, taking part in early milestones such as Oswald and the first Mickey Mouse shorts. His promotion to full animator came with The Skeleton Dance (1929) and was solidified when he officially took over Mickey Mouse after Ub Iwerks’s departure.
Over the following decades Clark animated key scenes in Disney classics: portions of the dwarfs in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the Sorcerer’s Apprentice segment in Fantasia, sequences in Pinocchio, and notable work on The Three Caballeros, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan and Lady and the Tramp. His draftsmanship was praised for its sense of timing and charm, particularly in musical sequences.
In the 1950s Clark moved into directing for television and film, signing projects such as the Tinker Bell opening for the Disneyland television program and sequences for Sleeping Beauty; he also directed educational shorts like Donald in Mathmagic Land. He retired in 1975, leaving a legacy as a central animator in the development of Disney’s classic style.
