Levi Eshkol was one of the leading figures in the construction of the State of Israel, notable as a politician and public administrator. A central figure in the Zionist labor movement, he co-founded the Histadrut and the Haganah, led essential colonization and infrastructure initiatives—most notably the creation and expansion of the water supply company Mekorot—and held executive positions in the Mapai party and the Jewish Agency. As minister of finance (1952–1963) and later as prime minister (1963–1969), Eshkol implemented economic and administrative policies that shaped the young state. Serving as defense minister for part of his tenure, he led the country through the turbulent early 1960s and the Six-Day War, confronting diplomatic and military challenges. Eshkol also played a significant role in foreign relations, becoming the first Israeli head of government to make an official visit to the White House; his relationship with President Lyndon B. Johnson influenced American assistance to Israel. He died in office in 1969, leaving a legacy tied to the institutionalization of the state, the modernization of public services, and the consolidation of organized labor’s role in Israeli society.
