Lise Meitner was an Austrian physicist whose work on radioactivity and nuclear physics was decisive for the discovery of nuclear fission. Trained at the University of Vienna under Ludwig Boltzmann, she distinguished herself in an academic environment hostile to women, becoming a pioneer in women's access to higher education and scientific research. In Berlin she collaborated for decades with chemist Otto Hahn at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute, where they contributed to the discovery of protactinium and investigated radioactive processes that culminated in 1938–39 with the physical explanation of uranium nucleus fission—developed by Meitner and her nephew Otto Frisch. That theoretical understanding revealed the potential for a chain reaction and had profound scientific and political consequences. Persecuted by the Nazi regime because of her Jewish origin, she escaped to Sweden, where she continued to produce research despite limited resources. She declined an invitation to the Manhattan Project on pacifist grounds and deplored the military use of nuclear physics. Her legacy includes belated recognition and honors such as the element meitnerium (Mt); historians regard her case as emblematic of injustices in twentieth‑century scientific awards.
