Lou (Louis) Graydon Sullivan was an American author and activist who played a central role in the visibility and organization of trans men (FTM) in the 1970s and 1980s. A pioneer in publicly asserting the existence of trans men attracted to men, Sullivan drew a clear distinction between gender identity and sexual orientation, shaping clinical and social practices that had previously denied treatment to trans people because of their sexuality. He founded FTM International and worked with San Francisco support groups, editing newsletters and advising peers on how to obtain counseling, hormone therapy, and surgeries outside traditional clinics. His communications work broadened access to practical information about passing and care, helping spur rapid growth in the FTM community during that period. Sullivan also lobbied professional associations to remove sexual orientation as a contraindication to reassignment treatment and took part in creating and preserving institutional memory about trans history; his papers are held in historical collections in San Francisco. He published diaries and other writings, a selection of which was released posthumously.
