Mackenzie Phillips is an American actress and singer, best known for her role in the film American Graffiti (1973) and for portraying Carol on the television series One Day at a Time, which brought her prominence in the 1970s and 1980s. The daughter of singer John Phillips of the Mamas & the Papas, she was raised in a family with a strong artistic presence, including half-sisters also active in music and film. Her career combines early successes with interruptions caused by substance dependence. She underwent lengthy periods of rehabilitation and made occasional returns to television, such as a role on So Weird (1999), when she also performed songs in episodes of the series. Over the years she appeared in projects including American Graffiti and guest spots in comedy and drama series. Her personal life drew public attention at several points, including legal episodes related to drug possession and controversial statements publicized in 2009.
