Maria Marc (Bertha Pauline Marie Franck, 1876–1955) was a German artist whose work spanned painting and textile art. Trained in art in Berlin and Munich, she initially worked on landscapes and depictions of children—subjects that remained central to her expressionist output. She attended the Worpswede artists’ colony and joined the circle that would help found the Der Blaue Reiter movement, showing three works in the 1912 exhibition that reflected the group’s valorization of childlike spontaneity. After World War I and the death of her husband, the painter Franz Marc, Maria withdrew permanently from painting and turned to textiles. From 1922 she studied at the Bauhaus in Weimar and built a career as a weaver, producing tapestries that show influences from Paul Klee’s compositions. From 1929 to 1938 she lived chiefly in Ascona, where she found a setting conducive to experimentation. Her tapestries were shown again publicly in a 1952 Munich exhibition. After her death, others worked to preserve and promote her oeuvre, helping maintain the memory of the German expressionist circle.
