Maria Carolina Ferdinanda Luísa of Bourbon-Two Sicilies, Duchess of Berry, was a central figure in the French legitimist restoration in the early 19th century. Daughter of King Francis I of the Two Sicilies, she married Charles Ferdinand, Duke of Berry, in 1816, aligning herself with the Bourbon court in Paris and becoming an influential figure after her husband's assassination in 1820. Her son, Henri, Count of Chambord, was hailed as the direct continuation of the Bourbon line. During the years of the Restoration and the July Revolution of 1830, Caroline alternated between exile and attempts to return to political life: she lived in Bath and Edinburgh, went back to Naples and organized actions to restore the legitimist dynasty, culminating in a failed insurrection in the Vendée in 1832, which led to her arrest. Freed in 1833, she later acknowledged a secret marriage to the Italian nobleman Ettore Carlo Lucchesi-Palli. In subsequent years she lived in Italy, acquiring the palazzo Ca' Vendramin Calergi in Venice, but became impoverished by the circumstances of the Risorgimento and the sale of works of art. Rejected by part of the Bourbon family, she spent her final years apart from the court and died in 1870; her life inspired literary accounts, including works by Alexandre Dumas.
