Marinus van der Lubbe was a Dutch factory worker, radical activist and committed communist known for his connection to the Reichstag fire of 27 February 1933. A militant from his youth, he took part in communist organizations and unemployed workers’ groups and also drew close to anarcho-syndicalist unions; he experienced periods of unemployment and of activism in the Netherlands and in Germany, where he sought political engagement. Apprehended inside the German parliament building during the blaze, Van der Lubbe confessed to the act and stated he had acted alone, claiming it was a gesture of protest against the condition of the working class. At trial he was accused of belonging to a communist conspiracy, while critics argued the fire was used as a pretext for repression by the newly installed Nazi regime. Sentenced to death, he was executed by guillotine in January 1934. The case remained controversial for decades, prompting historiographical debate over authorship and motives. Subsequent legal proceedings altered and reexamined his conviction, and in 2008 the German public prosecutor’s office posthumously annulled the verdict. The episode had significant political repercussions, helping to justify legal and repressive measures adopted by the Nazi regime.
