Matthew Henry was a British Presbyterian minister and nonconformist author, born on the border of Wales, whose pastoral and literary work unfolded mainly in late 17th‑ and early 18th‑century England. Initially trained in the humanities and law, he abandoned legal study for theology and became notable for expository preaching and a rigorous habit of preparing sermons. His fervent, accessible oratory drew audiences and made him a central figure in the Presbyterian communities of Chester, where he helped found the chapel on Trinity Street and build a growing congregation. Henry lived in a period marked by the religious tensions following the Restoration and by the presence of dissenters and those ejected from the Church of England; his family background and home education contributed to a strong biblical scholarship—he knew Latin and read the New Testament in Greek while still young. In addition to his pastoral work, he devoted much of his life to the study and systematic writing of biblical commentaries. He is best remembered for the monumental Exposition of the Old and New Testaments, an extensive collection of commentaries that cemented his reputation and influenced generations of readers and preachers. His legacy endures in Protestant circles because of his clear exposition, pastoral zeal, and emphasis on practical applications of Scripture.
