Mehmet Cengiz Öz, known as Dr. Oz, is a Turkish‑American cardiothoracic surgeon, author, and television personality. Trained in medicine and business at the University of Pennsylvania, he pursued an academic and hospital career in New York, where he helped develop cardiac procedures and devices such as the MitraClip, and held the chair of surgery at Columbia University until becoming emeritus in 2018.
Alongside his medical work, Oz rose to national prominence as a guest on high‑audience programs and later as the host of The Dr. Oz Show, a television series on health that earned awards and wide visibility. His promotion of alternative therapies and comments on integrative medicine have drawn criticism from parts of the scientific community and medical journals.
In 2022 he entered politics as a Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate from Pennsylvania; he was the first Muslim candidate nominated by one of the major parties, but was defeated. In 2025 he became head of the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) after presidential appointment and Senate confirmation. His career combines clinical practice, technical inventions, media presence, and public‑political involvement.
