Michel Gauquelin was a French psychologist and statistician who conducted a controversial statistical study of astrology, called by himself neo-astrology or cosmobiology. He is considered the first scholar to apply rigorous statistical techniques to the study of astrology.
One of his most famous experiments was to create the astrological profile of several readers of the magazine "Ici Paris". He published an advertisement in the magazine, which read: "Absolutely free! Your personal horoscope. A ten-page document." All interested had to do was send their name, address, date and place of birth by mail, and they would receive a horoscope and a personality profile. Many of the more than 150 people who responded to the "astrologer" said they were impressed by the accuracy of the profile. In total, 94% of the people declared themselves satisfied and 90% said that their relatives and acquaintances recognized them in the profile.
However, all who responded to the advertisement had received the same document: it was the profile of the famous French serial killer Marcel Petiot, who had been born in the French city of Auxerre at 03:00 on January 17, 1897.
