Nick Clooney is an American journalist and television presenter, known for a long career at local stations and for his work as a news anchor and news director. He gained regional prominence hosting morning programs and, in 1974, reached a national audience as host of the game show The Money Maze. As a newsman he was notable for his coverage of the Beverly Hills Supper Club fire in 1977 and for a weighty journalistic approach that helped turn WKRC into the ratings leader in the Cincinnati market. Over the decades he worked in major markets — Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, and Buffalo — and also served as host and researcher of classic films for the American Movie Classics channel. He remains active as a commentator and columnist, repeatedly returning to local radio and TV, and he has spoken out against editorial practices he regarded as ideological by some ownership groups. Beyond journalism, Clooney attempted a move into politics as the Democratic candidate for Congress in Kentucky in 2004; after his defeat he resumed work in media and activism. In partnership with his son, he produced the 2006 documentary A Journey to Darfur and became involved in humanitarian campaigns and efforts to raise awareness about the conflict in Darfur. He has been a visiting professor in communications, receiving honors and academic invitations, and his career combines influential regional journalism, humanitarian activism, and educational work.
