Nigel Allan Havers is an English actor known for portraying the archetypal British gentleman — elegant, politely spoken and with a commanding presence. He rose to international prominence as Lord Andrew Lindsay in Chariots of Fire (1981), a role that earned him a BAFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actor, and built a career alternating between film, television and theatre. Over the decades he has appeared in notable productions such as A Passage to India and Empire of the Sun, and in widely watched television series including Don’t Wait Up, Coronation Street and Downton Abbey. He has also worked in contemporary comedy and drama such as The Life of Rock with Brian Pern, Benidorm and Finding Alice, along with recent television roles and London pantomime appearances. Born into a family with a legal tradition, Havers turned to the arts and became a regular presence on West End stages and in popular pantomimes at the London Palladium. He has written an autobiography and taken part in entertainment programmes and documentaries related to his work. His career is characterized by versatility between dramatic and comic roles and by long-standing activity on the British performing scene.
