Norman Alexander MacCaig was a Scottish poet and teacher whose work was noted for its clear language, subtle humour and broad public appeal. Trained in classics at the University of Edinburgh, he divided his life between his native city and the landscapes of the Highlands, elements that appear in many of his poems. His output, begun with Far Cry (1943) and consolidated from Riding Lights (1955), moved from the experimentalism of his youth to a formally disciplined poetry and later to free verse, without losing its lucidity. As a teacher he worked in primary education before holding academic posts in creative writing and poetry, roles that expanded his reach as a reader and lecturer—public appearances that made him very popular. His career included friendships with key figures in Scottish poetry and critical recognition from writers such as Seamus Heaney and Ted Hughes. MacCaig maintained a personal stance marked by ironic humour and pacifist convictions during the Second World War, and left a lasting legacy in Scotland’s literary education: his poems are studied in schools and his work continues to influence generations of readers and poets.
