Oliver Hazard Perry Belmont was an American banker, socialite, and politician, known for belonging to the influential Belmont family and for serving one term as a United States Representative from New York (1901–1903). He inherited a considerable fortune from his father, August Belmont, worked at the banking firm August Belmont & Co., and published the weekly Verdict. A prominent figure in late 19th-century high society, Belmont was also known for his extravagant lifestyle, ties to artistic circles, and for commissioning the Belcourt mansion in Newport, designed by Richard Morris Hunt with monumental rooms and stabling for his horses. He belonged to aristocratic societies such as The Lambs and the Rhode Island Society of the Sons of the Revolution. His personal life drew public attention: he married Sara Swan Whiting and later Alva Vanderbilt, forming one of the era’s most notorious social unions. He died in 1908, leaving a legacy tied to finance, architectural patronage, and a conspicuous presence in New York and Newport society.
