Owen Kay Garriott was an electrical engineer and NASA astronaut, best known for his contributions to scientific research in flight. A professor of electrical engineering at Stanford, he earned his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees from the university and devoted his career to the study of the ionosphere, publishing more than 45 scientific articles and chapters. Selected as one of NASA’s first scientist-astronauts in 1965, he combined academic training with pilot instruction to serve on orbital research missions. In 1973 he flew on the Skylab 3 crew, spending more than 59 days in orbit and participating in extensive solar experiments, Earth-resources monitoring and biological studies of human adaptation to microgravity. Ten years later he flew on STS-9/Spacelab-1, a multidisciplinary international mission that helped validate the space laboratory as a research platform. Beyond flight activities, Garriott held executive and advisory roles in the aerospace industry, served on NASA and National Research Council committees and worked as an adjunct professor at research institutes. He was also a pioneer in the use of amateur radio in space—organizing the first amateur contact from orbit—and published, among other works, a historical account of the Skylab program. His career left a legacy in linking academic science with space operations.
