Paul Farmer was an American physician and anthropologist, a professor at Harvard Medical School and a leader in the field of global health. A co-founder and director of the organization Partners In Health (PIH) since 1987, he became known for implementing decentralized care models and for developing community-based strategies to bring high-quality care to poor populations and settings with scarce resources.
Author of influential works on health, human rights and the social inequalities that shape the distribution of infectious diseases, Farmer published in journals such as The Lancet and The New England Journal of Medicine and helped promote the concept of community health workers. Among his books are studies on Haiti, epidemics and the relationship between poverty and disease.
Recognized internationally, he received awards such as the Courage of Conscience Award (2007) for his humanitarian work and for strengthening health systems in vulnerable communities. His academic and activist career influenced global health policies and practices and left a lasting legacy in organizations and community programs.
