Sir Percy Lyham Loraine, 12th Baronet, was a British diplomat whose career spanned key posts in the first half of the twentieth century. He served on missions in the Middle East, took part in the Paris Peace Conference (1919), and held positions in capitals such as Rome, Beijing, Paris and Madrid before serving as minister in Tehran and Athens. He was appointed British High Commissioner in Egypt and the Sudan (1929–1933), a post he left after disagreements over King Fuad I’s influence on government.
He later served as ambassador in Ankara — where he befriended Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and helped tighten Anglo‑Turkish relations — and as ambassador to Italy until the early stages of the Second World War. His work in Ankara included visits with Atatürk and BBC‑broadcast tributes on the tenth anniversary of the Turkish leader’s death.
He retired from the diplomatic service in 1940 and devoted himself to Thoroughbred racing; his horse Darius won the 2000 Guineas in 1954, and he worked with the Jockey Club to introduce photo‑finish cameras. He died in London in 1961; with no heirs, the baronetcy became extinct.
