Peter Wooldridge Townsend was an officer in the British Royal Air Force, serving with distinction in World War II and later holding positions in the royal household. As a squadron commander during the Battle of Britain, he flew Hurricanes and Spitfires in both night and day units, rising to the rank of group captain in 1948. His military career included commands at stations such as Hunsdon, West Malling and Drem, as well as service as air attaché in Brussels from 1953 to 1956.

After the war, Townsend took on roles in the royal court: he served as groom of the bedchamber to George VI (1944–1952) and to Queen Elizabeth II (1952–1953), later becoming Deputy Master of the Household and then Controller to the Queen Mother. These posts placed him at the centre of official British circles in the postwar years.

Outside his military and court duties, Townsend became a prolific author. He wrote accounts of the war, biographies, memoirs and travel reportage, including works on the Battle of Britain, night bombing operations and his autobiography Time and Chance. He also worked as a military consultant in film.

Townsend’s personal life attracted public attention because of his relationship with Princess Margaret, which caused controversy in the 1950s due to dynastic rules. He was married twice and had two children. He died in 1995 in France of stomach cancer.
