Philip M. Crane was an American conservative politician, a member of the Republican Party, who served as a U.S. Representative from Illinois from 1969 to 2005. Trained in history, he worked as a university instructor and played a prominent role in rebuilding the conservative movement after Goldwater, being a founder of the Republican Study Committee and serving as president of the American Conservative Union from 1977 to 1979. Through sixteen re-elections, Crane became a hardline voice on the House's anti-statist and pro–free market wings, holding influential posts such as a seat on the Ways and Means Committee, where he advocated free trade and served as the committee’s vice chairman. In the 1970s he took part in public oversight initiatives, including an inspection of the Fort Knox vault, and was active in presidential campaigns and grassroots conservative organizing. His career lost momentum after a brief 1980 presidential bid and with the rise of new conservative leaders in the House. In the 2000s he faced criticism for drifting from his constituents and for personal problems that became public, culminating in his 2004 electoral defeat. Crane’s legacy is tied to strengthening the institutional conservative presence in Congress and to his long tenure as a Republican congressman.
