Gypsie Ann Evarts Stell was an American film and television actress. Having appeared in more than 130 works, including films, serials and episodes of television series, one of her most remembered roles is the character Lois Lane in the 1951 film Superman and the Mole Men, as well as the first season of the television series Adventures of Superman.
Her powerful damsel-in-distress persona was used to good effect in several episodes, but after a pause in filming, when production resumed Coates had already committed to other work. Noel Neill, who had previously portrayed Lois Lane, succeeded her on the series.
After that, she worked steadily, appearing in low-budget roles, westerns, serials and the McDoakes short subjects. Her most remembered films of the 1950s are "Blues Busters", with the Bowery Boys (in which she has a musical number), the serial Panther Girl of the Kongo, and I Was a Teenage Frankenstein.
Her last performances were on television, in the two-part episode "The Washington Affair" of the series Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, in 1994, and in Hollywood: The Movie, a 102-minute video in 1996.
