Pierre Corneille was one of the leading French dramatists of the 17th century, often mentioned alongside Molière and Racine as pillars of classical theatre. Born into a family of magistrates in Rouen, he trained in law before turning to literature, developing a style that placed tragic emotions within plausible scenes of contemporary society. His play The Cid and works such as Horace and Cinna affirmed a celebration of nobility of character and the conflict between passion and duty, central themes in his drama. Appointed official playwright by Cardinal Richelieu, Corneille also probed the relationship between political power and law in plays like The Death of Pompey and Rodogune, reflecting the crises France experienced in the mid-17th century, including the period of the Fronde. He was elected to the Académie française in 1647, occupying seat 14. Over more than four decades of activity, Corneille renewed French theatre, experimenting with stage effects, musical theatre, and treatments of renunciation and heroism—traits that gave rise to the adjective “cornelian.” His influence endured, prompting critical debate and annotated editions by Voltaire; in the 19th century his reputation was revived by figures such as Napoleon. Corneille died in 1684, leaving a large body of work central to the French dramatic tradition.
