Pierre Nora was a French historian of the third generation of the Annales School, known for his reflections on national identity, collective memory and the craft of the historian. His seminal work Les lieux de mémoire proposed a history of memory politics, distinguishing memory — constructed, emotional and malleable — from critical, rational historical narrative, and influenced the study of the political uses of the past in contemporary France.
Beyond his academic output, Nora played a central role as an editor and shaper of intellectual fields. At Gallimard he created series essential to the humanities and to history, and he edited and introduced works by French and foreign authors that became standard references in their disciplines. He co‑founded the journal Le Débat, which shaped French intellectual debate in the last decades of the twentieth century.
Recognized with several awards — including the Prix Gobert and the Grand Prix national de l'histoire — Nora also served on institutions such as the Bibliothèque nationale de France. His legacy combines research on collective memory with an editorial influence that helped reshape the landscape of the social sciences in France.
