Princess Elisabeth Marie Auguste of Bavaria was a member of the Wittelsbach dynasty and connected both to the Bavarian court and the Austrian imperial family. The eldest daughter of Prince Leopold of Bavaria and Archduchess Gisela of Austria, she was a paternal granddaughter of Regent Luitpold and a maternal granddaughter of Emperor Franz Joseph I, a position that placed her at the center of the dynastic networks of Central Europe in the late 19th century. In 1893 she secretly married Otto von Seefried auf Buttenheim; the union was considered morganatic because of differences in rank and religious confession. The marriage provoked a strong reaction within her family, especially from her grandfather the regent, and was only fully accepted after the intervention of her mother and Emperor Franz Joseph, who provided the couple with financial support and a reconciliation ceremony. The marriage lasted and produced five children, establishing the Seefried auf Buttenheim line in Baden and Upper Austria; the couple lived on inherited properties, including Buttenheim Castle. Elisabeth lived until 1957, remaining an example of personal choices that defied dynastic norms and of cross-border ties among the royal houses of her time.
