Princess of Bavaria Therese (Therese Charlotte Marianne Auguste) became known as a naturalist and explorer in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A member of a royal house, she taught herself zoology, botany, geography and ethnology, undertaking extensive travels across Africa, Europe, Asia and the Americas. Her expeditions to South America, including a visit to Brazil in 1888, produced ethnographic collections and the discovery of new species, and she published under the name Th. von Bayern to avoid bias against female authors. Known for her scholarship and fluency in several languages, Therese joined important scientific societies and received honors, among them the Austro-Hungarian Medal for Science and Art (1908) and an honorary doctorate from the University of Munich (1897). Her private collection of roughly 2,500 objects was incorporated into the Munich Museum of Ethnology. A campaigner for women’s access to higher education, she gave lectures on fauna, flora and indigenous languages and maintained an arboretum of exotic species at her home in Lindau, where she lived until her death in 1925. Her name remains linked to contributions in biological taxonomy and to the memory of pioneering scientific travel.
