Isabel, Duchess of Brabant, is the heir apparent to the Belgian throne and the eldest child of King Philippe and Queen Mathilde. Since her grandfather’s abdication in 2013 she has occupied the first place in the line of succession and is expected to become Belgium’s first reigning queen. Her title and position give her a symbolic and prospective political role within the country’s constitutional framework. A graduate of UWC Atlantic College in Wales, Isabel went on to study History and Politics at Lincoln College, University of Oxford, and also completed training in Social and Military Sciences at the Royal Military School of Belgium. She is multilingual — speaking Dutch, French, German and English — and has taken part in international educational programmes. Throughout her youth she has participated in official events and public speeches, and has been involved in volunteer work focused on children with learning difficulties, older people, people experiencing homelessness and people with disabilities. She practices sports such as tennis, skiing, sailing and diving, and maintains musical and literary interests. Her formal recognitions include the title Duchess of Brabant and the Grand Cordon of the Order of Leopold. Her academic and military training, combined with public exposure from an early age, shape the image of an heir prepared for state duties.
