Charlotte of France (1516–1524) was a 16th-century princess, the second daughter of King Francis I and Queen Claude. Born at the Château d'Amboise, she belonged from infancy to the Valois court: portraits made of her reflect her high social rank and a devotional practice signaled by the rosary depicted in the paintings.
In childhood she held a prominent place in the line of succession when the early death of her sister Louise led to her being named Dauphine of France, a title equivalent to heir apparent. That status, however, was brief: the birth of her brother Francis in 1518 relegated her to the position of Princess Charlotte of Valois.
Delicate and frail in health, she lived chiefly at the Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye. At seven she contracted measles and died on 18 September 1524, leaving a marked impression on her family’s memory, particularly that of her aunt Marguerite de Navarre, who tended her in her final days.
