Carolina Maria Teresa Josefa of Parma was a princess of Parma by birth and became Princess of Saxony when she married Crown Prince Maximilian in 1792. A granddaughter of monarchs and a member of one of the most connected royal houses in Europe, she was the daughter of Duke Ferdinand I of Parma and Archduchess Maria Amalia of Habsburg‑Lorraine, ties that made her the niece of figures such as Emperor Joseph II and Queen Marie Antoinette.
The marriage brought the courts of Parma and Saxony closer together amid the political upheavals sweeping Europe at the end of the 18th century. The union produced eight children, among them Frederick Augustus II and John I, who later became kings of Saxony, and several daughters who married into ruling houses of Italy and Austria, thereby sustaining the family’s dynastic influence.
Awarded honors such as the Order of Queen Maria Luisa, Carolina died in Dresden in 1804 of a fever. Her principal role was that of a dynastic actor: through marital alliances and offspring, she helped ensure the continuity and interconnection of European royal houses during the Napoleonic and post‑Napoleonic eras.
