Sibylla of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha was a princess of German-British origin who became a prominent figure in the Swedish royal family when she married Prince Gustaf Adolf, Duke of Västerbotten. A granddaughter and great-granddaughter of notable European lines, her ancestry linked her directly to Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom, placing her within the dynastic network that shaped twentieth-century monarchies.
During the decades she lived in Sweden, Sibylla played a prominent role as consort and, after her husband’s untimely death in 1947, as dowager duchess, providing institutional support to King Gustaf VI Adolf. Her position grew more important from 1965, when the deaths of senior members of the royal family brought her greater responsibilities within the House of Bernadotte.
Mother of five children, including the current King Carl XVI Gustaf, Sibylla is remembered both for her dynastic role—securing the succession—and for the public recognition she received, reflected in various national and foreign honors. She died in 1972 of cancer and is buried in the royal cemetery in Solna, Stockholm.
