Werner Hinz was a German actor whose stage and film career spanned more than six decades. Trained at Max Reinhardt’s school at the Deutsches Theater, he made his stage debut in 1922 and remained active in theatre throughout his life, establishing himself as a performer of both classical and modern repertoire. In film, he appeared in around 70 movies between 1935 and 1984, notable for portraying historical and military figures — including crown princes and other authorities. He worked with prominent directors of the era and took part in emblematic German productions from the 1930s through the 1950s. He also contributed to international projects, portraying Field Marshal Erwin Rommel in The Longest Day (1962). During World War II he appeared in films of the period, including titles now associated with that era’s cinema. After the war he returned to a steady presence in film and television, appearing in notable 1950s works and in various television adaptations through 1985. His legacy is one of versatility across stage, screen and television and a long professional career that made him a recognizable figure in twentieth‑century German cultural life.
