Princess Ashraf Pahlavi was a member of the Pahlavi dynasty and a central figure in Iran’s twentieth‑century political life. The twin sister of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, she served as a palace adviser and became known as the “power behind the throne,” playing a significant role in the events that culminated in the 1953 coup against Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s she worked on international causes related to women’s rights and literacy, representing Iran at UN bodies and taking part in initiatives such as the International Year of the Woman. In public statements she advocated concrete improvements in access to food, education, and health, although her positions drew criticism because of political repression in the country. Exiled after the 1979 Revolution, she lived in Europe and the United States and remained critical of the Islamic regime in Iran. Her public life included diplomatic activity, lawsuits she brought against what she considered financial defamation, and surviving an assassination attempt in 1977 on the French Riviera. Overall, Ashraf Pahlavi is remembered for her political influence with the Shah, her activism on social causes, and the controversy surrounding her role in decisions of power and allegations about wealth and conduct during the imperial era.
