Prince of Prussia Henry William Adalbert (1811–1873) was a Prussian officer, naval theorist and admiral whose work shaped the formation of German naval forces in the nineteenth century. A grandson of King Frederick William II, he initially served in the Guard artillery and undertook extensive sea voyages that took him to Britain, Russia, the Mediterranean and Brazil, where he explored the Amazon region and recorded travel observations. Those experiences strengthened his conviction about the importance of command of the sea for commercial and industrial nations. Adalbert drafted plans for a Prussian fleet as early as the 1830s and, during the revolutions of 1848, played a central role in creating the first unified German fleet, the Reichsflotte, by chairing naval technical commissions. In the following decade he helped establish the Prussian Navy and in 1864 commanded it during the Second Schleswig War, taking part in Baltic operations aboard the aviso SMS Grille. His career combined strategic thought and practical command, influencing the professionalization and institutionalization of German naval forces. Married morganatically to Therese Elssler, he left a legacy tied to the consolidation of the Prussian navy and the promotion of the doctrine of maritime power.
