Prince Georg of Saxony (Friedrich August Georg) was the last crown prince of the Kingdom of Saxony, holding that position from 1904 until the royal abdication in 1918. The eldest son of King Frederick Augustus III and Archduchess Louise of Austria-Tuscany, he received a private court education shaped by Catholic faith. He served in World War I as a captain, was wounded at the front, and was awarded the Iron Cross, first class. With the collapse of the German monarchies at the end of the war, he renounced his dynastic rights and followed a religious vocation: he became a Jesuit priest, a decision that sparked controversy among monarchists who had seen him as a hope for restoration. As a clergyman he became known for ecumenical stances and for public statements defending Jews and promoting cooperation between Catholics and Protestants. During the Nazi era he was criticized by the regime and monitored by the Gestapo for aiding Jews and opponents; he maintained contacts with figures linked to the resistance. He died in 1943 under circumstances that raised questions, although the autopsy attributed his death to a heart attack. He was buried in Dresden Cathedral; his tomb was desecrated in 1945.
